Rosa Berta

The most famous pink car is one-off experimental 917 from 1971 numbered 917/20. Porsche was looking to improve performance through combining longtail ‘Langheck’ and short-tail ‘Kurz’ versions into one car. Task was taken by two teams, in-house Weissach team and french SERA. Weissach team proposed gorgeous innovative design but Porsche didn’t wan’t to risk with scrutineering at Le Mans and has chosen SEMA proposal. At first it looked more similar to 917, but wider and shorter it assumed grotesque proportions. The name ‘Rosa Berta’ (Pink Bertha) was written on the inner bodywork by the Porsche team at Zuffenhausen. Germas also called it ‘Trüffle Jäger von Zuffenhausen’, French called it ‘Cochon Rosé’, english ‘Pink Pig’…

The idea of coloring the car pink and painting the butcher’s pork cuts in German all over it is credited to Porsche designer Richard Söderberg. A bit of spite after losing out to SERA in the design competition? Despite the car being sponsored by Martini & Rossi, the sponsor’s branding was not to be found anywhere on the car. The absence of any corporate branding was the Count Rossi’s own decision, as he considered it too ugly as a race car.
